RIL glacial hazards activities
- Professor John M. Reynolds has presented invited keynote lectures at
a number of international scientific conferences:
- Glacial hazards and downstream effects of climate change on high
mountain glaciers. High mountain glaciers and challenges caused
by climate change, 8-10th June 2009, Tromsø, Norway,
Norwegian Polar Institute.
- GLOF hazards in Bhutan and the management of glacial lakes in high
mountain environments. High mountain glaciers and challenges caused
by climate change, 8-10th June 2009, Tromsø, Norway,
Norwegian Polar Institute.
- Criteria for glacial hazard assessment. Glacier hazards, Permafrost
hazards, and GLOFs in mountain areas: processes, assessment, prevention,
mitigation. 10-13th November 2009, GAPHAZ Workshop,
University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences (BOKU),
Vienna, Austria (see our news
item for more details).
- Managing glacial hazards in a changing climate. International Glaciological
Conference VICC 2010, Ice and climate change: a view from the
South, Valdivia, Chile, 1-3rd February 2010. CECS,
Valdivia, Chile (see our news
item for more details).
- Assessing and managing glacial hazards in a changing climate. Regional
climate risk resilience workshop: fostering resilience to remote geo-hazards,
Dushanbe, Tajikistan, 1-2nd June 2010 (see our news
item for more details).
- He acted as a co-convenor for a session on glacial hazards at the European
Geosciences Union assembly in Vienna, 6-7th May 2010.
- He is acting as co-ordinator to revise guidelines on glacial hazard
assessment and management following the GAPHAZ workshop in Vienna, in
November 2009.
- Professor Reynolds has been invited to present additional keynote talks
at the following meetings:
- 'Engineering mitigation measures for managing glacial hazards in the Cordillera
Blanca' at a 3-day workshop in Carhuaz, Cordillera Blanca, Peru, on Managing
Glacial Hazards in the Cordillera Blanca, Peru, 14-16th July 2010.
The meeting is being hosted by the Local Government of Carhuaz.
- 'Glacier hazards and climate change', one of two keynote lectures
at the meeting on Glacier hazards under accelerated change and
climate uncertainty: impacts on population, infrastructure and ecosystems,
and lessons for Patagonia, Santiago, Chile, 6-7th September,
and to participate in fieldwork in Patagonia afterwards.
- 'New challenges in managing glacial hazards in a changing climate'
at the Swiss Geoscience Meeting, 19-20th November, University
of Fribourg, Switzerland.
