This year’s international gathering of hydropower specialists was held in Bordeaux, France, 26th-28th October 2015.
Prof. John Reynolds, RIL’s MD, gave a presentation entitled ‘On the need to integrate Disaster Risk Management within the hydropower sector’. This was part of a specially-convened session following the devastating earthquakes in Nepal in April and May. As part of this conference, John was invited to a private side meeting organised by The World Bank to co-present the concept of ‘Resilience in hydropower’ to ICOLD (International Commission on Large Dams), which had featured in his presentation to the main conference. The hydropower sector has been hit hard by natural disasters in the last few years and The World Bank now screens all its projects for resilience to climate change and also to natural disasters through its Disaster Risk Management protocols. John is assisting The World Bank in how to define and then include resilience to natural disasters within its portfolio of hydropower projects.
