Prof. John Reynolds, MD of RIL, attended the 3-day international HYDRO-2014 conference and exhibition held at Cernobbio, northern Italy, 13-15th October 2014.
He gave an invited keynote presentation entitled ‘Natural Disaster Preparedness for Hydropower Development in High Mountain Environments’ in the session focused on the Asian region. He highlighted the current situation in the hydropower sector where natural hazards are not properly assessed and the risks to hydropower installations are not identified or managed realistically. Consequently, major investments in actual and planned hydropower projects are at risk and prospectively people’s lives are at stake unless the issue is taken seriously. He based his conclusions on forensic assessments of two recent disasters, one in Uttarakhand in northern India in June 2013 and another in Nepal in August 2014.
