About Us

Reynolds International Ltd (RIL) is the UK’s leading independent near-surface geophysics consultancy company.

Whether you are looking to develop a major offshore wind farm or a small commercial development on land, helping you with YOUR prospective project is what OUR business is all about. Each site investigation, earthquake preparedness plan, or glacial hazards assessment is unique to you. We view each project as a special case and are not satisfied until you are. Our highly qualified and experienced staff will take the time to work with you so that you feel confident that the project outcomes meet your requirements and your expectations.

The company was established in July 2009 by its Managing Director, Prof. John M. Reynolds. We specialise in near-surface and offshore wind farm geophysics consultancy, earthquake preparedness, and geological and glacial hazard assessment and mitigation as core parts of our business. Our activities have been built up from previous work undertaken over the previous 15 years by Reynolds Geo-Sciences Ltd (RGSL).

Our personnel have worked extensively in Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, South America, and Antarctica on a variety of commercial and

research projects. Our clients include the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO), UN agencies, engineering and renewable-energy consultancies, major corporations, renewable energy developers, hydropower consultants, other commercial organisations, international development banks, insurance companies and loss adjusters, and international government departments.

In order to provide you with the best technical advice, our extensive commercial experience is underpinned by research that is often undertaken in conjunction with UK and international university research groups. Our research is frequently published in peer-reviewed international journals.

Prof. Reynolds is the leading world expert on glacial hazard assessment and remediation and is also well-known internationally through his widely acclaimed textbook ‘An introduction to applied and environmental geophysics’.

Our Ethos

When I founded Reynolds Geo-Sciences Ltd in September 1994, and throughout the operation of Reynolds International Ltd since July 2010, our business ethos has been in support of the Green Agenda.  Although geoscientists, we have made a deliberate choice not to work in Hydrocarbon Exploration, including Shale Gas extraction, in any way.  Rather, we focus on supporting renewable energy projects, such as Offshore Wind Farm development, Tidal Stream and Tidal Range schemes, and major hydropower development, in all of which we play a significant international role. We do not actively support mineral extraction.

Given that we travel widely internationally as a requirement of delivering our services to clients globally, we offset our carbon footprint for all our business travel through certified tree planting schemes.  We also offset the carbon footprint of our staff commute mileage each year in order to minimise our overall carbon footprint.  As an ISO 14001 accredited company, we are committed to continual improvement in our office procedures, to optimise our use of electricity, gas, and water, and to minimise the environmental impact from our use of paper, etc.

We have abolished single-use plastic wherever possible and strongly encourage our suppliers to do the same.  Our purchasing decisions and choice of suppliers are strongly influenced by this approach.

Given our work in glacial and geological hazards in the Himalayas and Andes, we are acutely aware of the consequences of the impacts of warming global temperatures on the environment and on the vulnerable communities in these remote but critical regions.  This is in addition to seeing the increased frequency and magnitude of storm and flood events in the UK, extreme bushfires in California and Australia, extensive periods of drought in Africa, to name but a few examples.  The Climate Emergency is all too real and affects us all to a lesser or greater extent.  We at Reynolds International Ltd are working hard to do our bit to improve things for future generations.  We are continually looking for exceptional, talented, technical staff who share this ethos and believe passionately as we do and want to do something to help.  If you are such an individual, contact us to explore possible options.

TESTIMONIALS

HAPPY CLIENTS

"CEGS have known of Reynolds International Ltd, previously Reynolds Geo-Sciences Ltd, since the mid-1990s and have utilised their services over the years for specific surveying in the former underground coal and iron ore fields of West Cumbria. As a lead consultant, we have used Reynolds International to successfully locate and define both the underground workings and the mine entries that pose a hazard to the built environment, especially shafts in the iron ore workings. Additionally, we have also enrolled on the CPD training courses that are organised by Professor John Reynolds and these provide an invaluable update to our professional skills. We will continue to use Reynolds International as our preferred specialist Geophysical consultancy because of the consistent high professional standards that are applied to every project."

Dennis R. E. Dickins, CEGS, Cumbria

"The British Embassy, Bucharest, has been working with Professor John Reynolds, of Reynolds International Ltd, since 2008 in order to ensure that the Embassy’s earthquake and emergency planning is up to date; and that all staff, dependents and the British community, for which the Embassy has a responsibility, are briefed on the causes, the preparations and the relevant actions in the event of an earthquake. Professors Reynolds’s knowledge, advice and guidance has been invaluable in ensuring that the embassy’s plan is as up to date and in an as workable format as possible. His knowledge is second to none and his guidance is clear concise and in an understandable format."

B A Davidson – HM Consul, Head of Corporate Services, Bucharest, Romania

"The earthquake preparedness training course provided by Professor John M. Reynolds for BAT Romania’ employees during 3 days in February this year was a well designed and tailored course given the high seismic hazard area where Romania is located. The main aim of the course was to provide our employees with necessary information to help them to reduce their own vulnerability at work, in their out-of-work activities and in their family lives. I was very pleased with the results of the training and, most importantly, I have received very positive feedback from participants. I recommend this course for other commercial organizations in Romania or abroad."
